Rapid e-learning - a new convert

I'm in the middle of designing and developing a new blended learning course on the whole subject of embedded learning/performance support. The course will consist of some synchronous and asynchronous online activities and a two-day workshop. My general philosophy is, as far as possible, to have the participants co-create the content in a wiki as an output from their work on the course. However, I thought I should create some content up front both to act as sparks for debate but also as some examples of performance support materials. To do this I thought it was time I tried out some of these new fangled rapid e-learning tools that everyone's talking about (I know, I'm a little slow on the uptake!). Well anyway, I chose the Presenter/Quizmaker/Engage suite of products from Articulate and so far I've had a whale of a time (although I'm still going to charge my client). I've concentrated on producing really short pieces that are, as far as I can manage, lively, engaging and graphically-rich. At no point have I experienced any serious constraints that make me wish for a more sophisticated authoring tool (although there are some forms of interaction that Engage hasn't yet got templates for). I don't believe I've sacrificed on quality. No piece of material took more than a few hours. I've been able to upload all these materials into Moodle without any problems and the SCORM tracking works on the quizzes. Although I may not recommend this particular tool to develop long pieces of self-study learning, I don't believe there are many circumstances in which I would recommend anyone to do that anymore anyway. So call me a rapid e-learning convert.

Good to see someone recognising rapid tools for what they are - great for short bits of elearning that needs turning round in a hurry. There seems to be a lot of debate that questions the usefulness of the likes of Presenter or PointeCast, but as long as the material being processed is succinct and engaging, there really need be no problem. Issues arise when you have people, including clients, who want "rapid principles" (for which read "developed with a rapid tool") applied to larger learning pieces as a way of keeping the cost down, but then won't do anything else in the process to keep things moving quickly so add all the normal delays back in to the equation...

rapid e-learning - I just love it. It gives the trainer/designer so much control over the content.--- No waiting for a content author to make changes etc - it's here and now! I like to be able to blend 'home made' resources to suit my audience and to be able to modify at the drop of a hat. You recommended Audacity - this has been so much fun and I am now showing other lecturers how to use it for their classes - including the storytelling class.

Thanks for everyone who commented on this blog; it's interesting to get a cross-section of views from the participants.

Some of the participants have experienced some form of rapid e-learning (as developers or learning recipients) but have not been too pleased with the experience.

Some of the participants haven’t experienced working with rapid e-learning tools but think the concept is certainly worth exploring further.

Some of the participants have successfully utilised a rapid e-learning tool in their organisation and a very pleased with the outcome.

Some of the points highlighted for utilising a rapid e-learning tool for a successful outcome are outlined below:

• “Project managers should not select a rapid tool which focuses on creating content only but rather focus on all other components to ensure building an effective and attractive online course”.

• “If it is easier for designers and trainers to create materials the emphasis is more likely to be focused on the content rather than on the technology which I think can be an issue when involving technical experts”.

• “It gives the trainer/designer so much control over the content - no waiting for a content author to make changes.”

• “Before you start on any type of e-Learning development you need to have a good strategy in place… if they [rapid e-learning tools] give you rapid results, it does not necessarily follow that you get good results!”
