Audio quality does matter

In The Media Equation by Byron Reeves and Clifford Nass (Cambridge University Press, 1996), the authors make some profound and non-intuitive assertions about the ways in which people relate to computers and TVs. Among these are the following:
- Audio fidelity will attract attention to media.
- Audio fidelity will affect people's memory for audio information.
- People will evaluate better audio fidelity differently than poorer audio fidelity.
So, audio fidelity does matter. Now in an age in which it is increasingly easy to communicate using audio (podcasts, adding narration to screen capture movies, presentations, videos, etc.), and in which communication is more rapid and spontaneous, we might be tempted to put out any old thing, recorded using poor quality equipment and with little care. If Reeves and Nass are right, we'll be making a poorer impression if we do and we'll have less impact.
So, without going into studios and buying expensive kit what can you do? Well I've just purchased a high quality condenser microphone that sits on a table stand and plugs into the USB port on a desktop PC or laptop, without any software to install and the simplest of set ups (just go into Control Panel/Sounds and Audio/Audio and specify the recording device as 'USB Audio Codec'). It's a MXL-006 and it cost about £70 ($130). It works just great and obviates the need for any mic preamps or other cumbersome gear. You'll also want the pop shield (under £20), which stops those annoying peaks that you get when you say words with 'p' in.
Once you're set up, you can make high quality voice recordings without fuss, as easily as you did using a headset / built-in mic or whatever else you used before. All for under £100.

Clive, thanks for the tip. Do you have any samples of audio you have recorded with the MXL to share with the rest of us?
No public samples yet Craig. Will share one as soon as possible.
It is interesting to ask whether money and time spent on high quality video images in learning is worth it.
Reeves and Nass thought that because peripheral vision is largely ill-defined and that we are used to dealing perceptually, with low visual fidelity in twilight, fog and so on, we are likely to cope well with low fidelity visual images.
So they tested their hypothesis by measuring attention, memory and evaluation of the experience when viewing video. Interestingly they could detect no difference between those who viewed low as opposed to high fidelity images.
Taking their experiments further they also discovered that the size and shape of the screen and therefore image mattered more than quality. Large screens and images were preferable to higher quality images and horizontal screens and images were also preferred over higher quality. In other words larger wide screen format monitors have more impact than quality of image.
Other evidence of our tolerance for low fidelity video comes in our acceptance of black and white movies. We quickly forget that chrominance is missing as our perceptual system depend primarily on luminance.
Thanks Donald. It is a fascinating aspect of Reeves and Nass' work that video quality seems not to be of high importance whereas audio quality does. For me this is non-intuitive, but highly significant.
Hi Clive, great article! Where did you purchase the Mic and guard mentioned above? Also would love to hear anr any samples that you recorded with it. J
I bought the mic and pop shield at Turnkey, http://www.turnkey.co.uk, although any serious audio store should be able to source them.
