Articulate Online

Articulate Online

Jane Hart's e-Learning Pick of the Day drew my attention to Articulate Online, a hosted online service offered by Articulate for users who want a low-cost (from $199/month) means to deploy and track their e-learning content. This service is obviously going to appeal to smaller organisations who don't have an LMS, but it might also tempt some larger corporates who are either dissatisfied with their current LMS or looking for something simpler. As they say on the site:

"With Articulate Online you’ll never need an expensive corporate learning management system, and you’ll never worry about frustrating and unnecessary complexity."

I like what I've seen, particularly the way they've deliberately incorporated only the most-needed features and, as a result, been able to provide a clean and uncluttered interface. However, I do have two misgivings, which I believe Articulate could remedy:
  1. The service seems only to support content created with Articulate Presenter and QuizMaker. I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
  2. No concession has been made to the fact that content is often only a starting point in the learning process. In particular there are no facilities for forums. If you want to combine content and collaboration, you're better off using Moodle, although your reports won't be as extensive or as well-presented.

Hey Clive,

Great post. My name is Dave Mozealous and I am the QA Project Lead for Articulate Presenter.

As an FYI, the reason Articulate Online only supports content created with Articulate Quizmaker and Articulate Presenter is that only those products support the rich data reporting that is needed to create the reports in Articulate Online. Articulate Online uses a modified version of the SCORM standard for communication between content, and AO, as well as using the QTI standard. Unfortunately most other content authoring tools that support SCORM only support it at a minimal level, so if Articulate Online did support other content, we wouldn't be able to offer the rich reports that we currently do.

Also, in regards to the suggestion about incorporation of other features such as forums...great suggestion! Articulate Online is still a growing platform, so this is something we can look at incoporating in future versions of the tool.

Thanks again, and great post!

Glad to hear you like what you see, Clive!

Re: your point about most-needed features, you can see an in-depth 19-minute intro that explores some of the behind the scenes decision-making here. And, of course, we have a much shorter 3-minute overview on our AO tutorials page.

Thanks, too, for the two points of feedback. You're correct that you can currently publish only from Presenter and Quizmaker. Note, however, that with Presenter you can embed Engage interactions, 3rd-party Flash movies, and any kind of Web content with the Web Object feature, so there is some flexibility to integrate other types of content - you could even integrate an existing forum as a Web Object on any slide of a Presenter course.

So along with what Dave said on the technical reasons, there is some existing flexibility to be creative.

Thanks for the post and input!

Wow, you guys are on the ball. Thanks for the comments, they explain a lot and offer promise of even better things to come.

We're fast like that. :) I just threw together a quick demo to show you what I meant about integrating forums into Presenter/AO - it's hosted on my AO account, too.

Thanks Gabe, I've tried the demo and it works just fine. This really is rapid e-learning!

Clive

My clients like the concept of forums but they don't want to commit the resources to moderate them. :-)

They are concerned that if incorrect information is posted by an employee about a product or service at a company forum the company will be liable. (even if it is later corrected)

This issue must have been dealt with when companies establish wikis etc.

Any suggestions guidance?

I'd say that they should commit the necessary resources to moderating the forums. In my experience this is not so onerous.
