One prediction already on target

On January 3rd I laid out my e-learning predictions for 2008. One of these was:

"We'll see more online rapid e-learning authoring environments come on the market, perhaps even open source."

I was either inspired or lucky (you choose) because since then a beta of RapideL-i was announced and then earlier this week I was treated to a sneak preview of a new tool called Unison from Rapid Intake, the makers of Flashform. Full details of this product are being kept under wraps until early February, but let's just say I was very impressed, and the pricing model will raise some eyebrows.

These products will provide further competition for two online rapid e-learning authoring tools which have already achieved good success, particularly in Europe, and that's Atlantic Link and Mohive. By comparison, Unison and RapideL-i have different feature sets and very different routes to market, but they join their predecessors in providing the most essential benefits of online authoring, not least easy collaboration amongst those working on the development team.

I'm optimistic that competition will provide customers with better products at ever more achievable prices. Who knows, I may even be able to afford to use one.

Clive,
This story frustrated me. As the Cedarlearning research group at Royal Roads University we deployed our first online authoring tool in 1999, called the Kooltool. We didn't go commercial, but picked up around fifty corporate users, mainly in the USA. That was an ASP tool with some flash templates and some HTML. In 2005 we completely rebuilt the tool in .NET and called it myUdutu,(www.myudutu.com) created a private company (www.udutu.com) and proceeded to give the tool away free of charge in a model similar to open source, though not actually sharing the source code. The tool has attracted many thousands of users without ever having spent a penny on marketing or advertising. the user base is growing exponentially and Udutu makes its living from the custom development work that growes out of the user community. To see this concept characterised as revolutionary or as a new trend, frustrates me because all along since the late 1990's we advocated the idea of online collaboration as the best way to develop courses and include all the stakeholders in the process. It eliminates all the roadblocks that desktop software brings because desktop software inevitably winds up on only a few desktops. myUdutu is extremely powerful, automates things like converting video to stream and antialiasing screenshots, etc. and has conditional branching and simulation building features that are more powerful than anything else on the market, yet very easy to use. How come this tool never even got onto your radar? We had been congratulating ourselves on the explosive growth, and then were brought back to earth by the realization that we haven't even registered as much as brand new more commercial (and higher priced) offerings.

Well I've certainly heard of it now! Congratulations on such a successful product. Who cares if I've never heard of it?
