In their own words

I recently received a copy, through the Association for Learning Technology (ALT), of a fascinating publication sponsored by JISC called In their own words. The publication synthesises the outcomes of Phase 1 of JISC's Learner experiences of e-Learning studies, which set out to examine the phenomenon of e-learning from the perspective of the learners themselves. The research was carried out in the UK amongst those involved in further and higher education, as well as work-based learning.

I'd like to share some of the conclusions:

"Learning in a digital age: Using technologies in all aspects of their studies, today's digital learners rarely see e-learning as a separate or special activity. They are adept at blending personal and institutionally owned technologies with traditional approaches to learning in ways that are unique to them."

This is an interesting perspective. When technology is so pervasive, is the term e-learning still meaningful or relevant?

"Communication and networking: Technology supports a continuum of social interaction, increasing learners' ability to network with their peers and communicate with their tutors."

This emphasises once again that e-learning is no longer just a way of delivering materials to isolated learners. At least as far as learners are concerned, the primary benefits of technology are social.

"Benefits: Learners find significant advantages in using technology. These differ according to the individuals' perspectives, but increased choice, ease of access to information and control over when and how they learn are highly valued."

Learners are individuals and want to have control over how and when they learn, including which technologies they use. What they don't want are organisations - educational or otherwise - telling them how it should be done.

It was about time someone asked.

Slow down here - look at the research this is an 'educational' study. The survey doesn't even have an option for non-educational learning.

Q4 Which University or college do you attend?

Is ALT really suggesting that all those kids accessing BBC Bitesize, the millions who access Wikipedia daily, the millions who have bought Brain Training, have been engaging in a social experience?

Their definition of learning is institutional and social, so the conclusions are self-fulfilling.

Hiya Clive,

I'd like to challenge the leap you made from the last quote to your conclusion. In response to your question, "It was about time someone asked", you might find recent JISC and ECAR reports interesting as reported here http://ebcnzer.blogspot.com/2008/01/first-weekly-for-new-year_11.html#NINE and here: http://ebcnzer.blogspot.com/search?q=jisc#ONE

It seems to me that research is increasingly affirming the role of formal education and that learners prefer a separation of educational technologies from their social use of the Web, though they will use the latter for formal education at their discretion.

The 'how and when' mentioned in the report applies to activities and learning opportunities within courses themselves and not to the role of the formal institution as a whole.
