Another application for the 100:10:1 rule
Watching the FA Cup Final last Saturday made me aware that the 100:10:1 rule has another application. If you're not familiar with the rule in so far as it relates to forums, blogs and wikis, the idea is that for every 100 users, one sets up the forum thread, blog or wiki page, ten contribute by replying, commenting or making amendments, while the rest are passive consumers.
I believe the same applies to singing at football matches: one person starts the chant, ten join in, while the others soak up the atmosphere. As a generally shy person it took me 20 years of going to football before I became a singer; I could go another 20 years and never become the one who starts it all off. There's a lesson her for football clubs - if they want the atmosphere and the support for the team that singing provides, they should offer free tickets to the one in a hundred that will do all the work. This wouldn't incentivise me, but it would work for plenty.

I've just this minute put a comment on Christy Tucker's latest post about this same ratio (whether 100-10-1 or @Tony - 90-9-1, the general idea's the same).
I asked Christy if she knew of any statistical study done coparing hits on a post with the number of comments put there. Do you know of any? I get the impression that the results might be illuminating. Whether it would light up the soccer field is another matter, but at least I wouldn't be in the dark.

Interesting post Clive. I was lucky enough to be at Wembley for the FA Cup final last week (being a huge Pompey fan) and witnessed the lead singers myself.
There is one particular individual (John Westwood) who is the absolute 'singing leader of the pack'. Not only that, he has some assistants who provide support (via drums and an out of tune trumpet). Everyone is waiting for the chant to start....and the result is the coordination of 30,000 voices around the stadium.
PFC were clever enough to give John and his 'assistants' tickets right behind the goal at Wembley from where he could maximise his impact.
The result.....Portsmouth won!
I am an apprentice singer (it has been a 30 year apprenticeship) but my son seemd to get promoted much more quickly. My right ear was near deaf after the game as he would start the Blue Army chant at every opportunity. Clearly he is a leader already!

Thanks for your post-it has made me quite home sick. Having moved to New Zealand 11 years ago, I miss all the communal singing at football matches (I was a Salisbury City fan). But now I get to go to the rugby and do the haka instead. cheers Sarah
